What is a CVV number and how do I find it?

The CVV Number ("Card Verification V erification") on your credit card or debit card is a 3 digit number on your VISA®, MasterCard and Discover® branded credit and debit cards. On your American Express® branded credit or debit card, it is a 4-digit numeric code.

Your CVV number can be found by looking at your credit or debit card, as illustrated in the image below:

Giving your CVV number to an online merchant proves you actually have a physical credit or debit card - and helps keep you safe while reducing fraud.

CVV number is NOT your card's secret PIN (personal identification number).

You may not enter your PIN number when asked to provide your CVV. (A PIN number allows you to use a credit or debit card at an ATM or when making direct purchases with your debit card or cash withdrawals with any credit card.)

CVV numbers are also known as CSC numbers ("Card Security Code"), as well as CVV2 numbers, which are the same as CVV numbers, except that they are generated by a 2nd generation process which makes them more difficult to "guess".
