Amex Announces Additions and Deductions to Side Benefits in 2020

American Express made adjustments to secondary benefits across the card portfolio on January 1, 2020, adding new benefits, tinkering with others and eliminating some of it altogether.

"This is part of our effort to offer our card members the benefits they value most," an AmEx spokesman said in a statement to NerdWallet.

Although you may not choose a credit card based solely on additions, it's good to know how your card might or might not be owned. This is what lies ahead for American Express cards.

This feature will allow eligible cardholders to be replaced for non-refundable trips purchased with eligible cards for up to $ 10,000 per trip and up to $ 20,000 per account per 12 consecutive month period. Conditions apply.

What is pruned
Travel accident insurance and roadside assistance
This benefit, which is offered on all American Express cards, will no longer be available starting in 2020.

"These two benefits are not popular with our card members and are used at less than 1%," an AmEx spokeswoman said in an email to NerdWallet.

What changes?
Purchase protection
At present, all American Express cards provide purchase protection on eligible items purchased with their cards up to 120 days from the date of purchase if they are stolen or accidentally damaged. Starting January 1, 2020, the protection will drop to 90 days from the date of purchase. American Express confirms to NerdWallet that items purchased before that date still have 120 days of purchase protection. Conditions apply.

Extension of warranty
Under current conditions, American Express can provide up to two additional years for a genuine US factory warranty for five years or less when you use your card for new purchases that qualify. This excitement now applies to all American Express cards. Starting January 1, 2020, the warranty extension will drop to one year. Conditions apply.

Although the benefits of extending the current warranty apply to all American Express cards, it will no longer be offered on four consumer cards without an annual fee:

Blue from American Express®.

Amex EveryDay® Credit Card.

American Express Cash Magnet® Card.

Blue Cash Everyday® card from American Express.

Protection back

All American Express cards currently offer a refund protection for 90 days from the date of purchase of an eligible item. If the merchant will not take back your purchase, American Express can return the full purchase price (excluding shipping and handling), up to $ 300 per item, up to a maximum of $ 1,000 per card account per calendar year based on the date of purchase. Conditions apply.

Starting January 1, 2020, this will be the only card that offers refund protection:

Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant ™ American Express® Card.
